Samsung Partners with TSMC 3nm for Nvidia Custom NVHBM Base Die Production

Nvidia Mandates Unified NVHBM Architecture

Semiconductor industry reports on October 19, 2026, confirmed a structural realignment across the artificial intelligence hardware supply chain. Nvidia established a unified design standard for next-generation High-Bandwidth Memory designated as NVHBM, built upon the HBM4E architecture.

Under this specification, Nvidia relocates the custom memory controller directly onto the base die of the memory stack rather than housing it within the primary graphics processor die. This architectural shift frees valuable silicon area on the main GPU, allowing chip designers to dedicate more physical area to arithmetic compute cores for frontier model processing.

To ensure uniform electrical performance and high manufacturing yield rates across vendors, Nvidia mandated that its three primary memory suppliers (Samsung Electronics, SK hynix, and Micron Technology) fabricate the custom base die exclusively using TSMC's 3-nanometer (3nm) logic process.

Departure from Samsung's In-House Turnkey Model

Accepting Nvidia's fabrication mandate marks a notable departure for Samsung Electronics. The South Korean manufacturer has historically championed an integrated turnkey delivery model, fabricating DRAM storage dies and logic base dies entirely within its proprietary foundry network.

By contracting base die production to TSMC, Samsung is unbundling its memory and advanced logic operations for the first time at this packaging layer to secure high-volume allocations for Nvidia AI accelerators. Internal technical assessments indicated that insisting on proprietary foundry nodes could create interface validation discrepancies and delay volume qualification against competing vendors.

Samsung will continue to produce the stacked memory layers using its proprietary sixth-generation (1c) DRAM process nodes.

Dual-Track Operational Strategy and Capacity Safeguards

Samsung adopted a dual-track strategy to mitigate operational dependency on a competitor. For custom NVHBM modules tailored to Nvidia, Samsung adheres strictly to TSMC's 3nm production pipeline.

Simultaneously, Samsung maintains active production lines within its internal foundries for standard-specification HBM modules marketed to other cloud and accelerator clients. Internal foundry capacity also serves as a strategic fallback mechanism should aggregate accelerator demand outpace TSMC's available advanced logic wafer allocation.

Global Supply Chain Consolidation

Nvidia's enforcement of a single base die foundry standard highlights TSMC's central position within the advanced AI hardware supply chain. The growing physical convergence of logic controllers and memory dies inside advanced packaging structures requires unprecedented collaboration between direct competitors.

The operational partnership between Samsung and TSMC demonstrates that thermal and density constraints in AI hardware scaling now outweigh traditional foundry rivalries.
